Not that I needed any more reasons to dissuade those I know and love (and even those I don’t know and love) from putting themselves in harm’s way as a member of the U.S. military, but here is another: The U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, is actually considering…seriously…an idea proposed by British Maj. Gen. Nick Carter, the commanding officer of the “international forces” in southern Afghanistan, to award medals for the restraint shown in combat. In defending the idea, McChrystal’s spokesman, Lt. Col. Tadd Sholtis, provided the reassurance that “we support the right of our forces to defend themselves.” How nice.
Take heed, those of you who are considering enlisting, as well as those parents of same. My last column spoke of the travesty of three Navy SEALs facing punishment at the hands of the U.S. for merely punching a terrorist-murderer. This is another example of the same ideology, one that no longer encourages the patriotic warrior-spirit so necessary to prevail against our enemies in combat, but instead seeks to punish it. Our government puts our soldiers on trial and endeavors to give medals for not fighting…and all of this will end with you or yours in a pine box, sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.
